Exploring the Future of Independence: Our Assistive Tech Team Visits a Smart Home

Last week, our Assistive Technology Team toured a Smart Home to see firsthand how new innovations are transforming daily life. What they discovered was both exciting and full of possibilities for the people we support.

First Impressions

The team was struck by how simple yet powerful many of the tools were. From lights that respond to a voice command, to blinds that open with a tap or a knock on the wall, small changes could mean big leaps in independence. One team member shared, “It was easy to get excited about setting something similar up here.”

Surprising Discoveries

Several technologies stood out:

  • Astro the robotic companion – able to check in on someone, video chat, and even call for help if needed.

  • Smart fridge & oven – tracking expiration dates, suggesting recipes, and syncing with the oven for safer cooking.

  • Eye-tracking and voice control – offering independence for those with limited mobility.

  • Knocki sensors – devices that turn knocks or vibrations into actions like opening blinds or turning on lights.

  • Presence sensors – detecting activity in a room, reminding people about medications, or even helping with fall detection.

Why It Matters

For the individuals we serve, these tools are more than gadgets. They mean:

  • Greater independence – controlling your own environment with your voice, eyes, or a tap.

  • Improved safety – like stovetops that don’t get hot, preventing burns.

  • Connection and peace of mind – families and DSPs can stay involved while giving individuals more autonomy.

As one team member put it, “It’s just cool to have cool tech—but more than that, it creates real opportunities for people to live more fully and safely.”

What’s Next at Shared Wellness

We’re already piloting tools like automatic pill dispensers, communication devices, and smart hubs. With the support of an ODP Technology Grant, our Technology Committee is exploring what’s possible—and bringing these innovations home to our community.

This is just the beginning. From remote supports to robotic helpers, the future of care is smart, connected, and full of promise.
